Also called an extensometer, this is a measuring instrument that determines the elongation characteristic, one of the mechanical properties of a material. Figure 1 shows an extensometer attached to a tensile test piece of material. The extensometer's mounting fixture is attached via a pivot or knife edge to the upper and lower marks that indicate the gauge length of the test piece. A displacement sensor detects the amount of movement of the mounting fixture in response to the elongation of the test piece due to the load. The figure shows a differential transformer, but there are also other types that use resistive strain gauges and magnescales to detect displacement.

伸び計ともいう。材料の機械的性質の一つである伸び特性を求める測定器。図1は，材料の引張試験片に伸び計を取り付けた状態を示している。試験片の標点距離を示す上下の標線の個所に，伸び計の取付具をピボットやナイフエッジを介して取り付ける。荷重の負荷による試験片の伸びに追随して，取付具が動いた量を変位センサーで検出する。図は差動トランスを用いたものであるが，このほか抵抗体ひずみゲージ，マグネスケールを変位検出に利用したものもある。
