…Born in St. Petersburg, he was elected a member of the Russian Academy in 1855, lived in Jena (1868), and later moved to Leipzig (1885). His most notable achievement was the compilation of the Sanskrit dictionary (Sanskritwörterbuch) (1853-75) in perfect collaboration with Walter Rudolf von Roth (1821-95) of the University of Tübingen. This large, seven-volume work has survived for over 100 years, and no dictionary has surpassed it to date. His Sanskrit Reader (1845) was unrivaled in its selection of original texts and its organization, and his translation of Panini's grammar (Panini's Grammar) (1887) became the starting point for Panini research. …
