…A large deciduous climbing plant of the Vitaceae family that grows in mountainous areas (illustration). The vines are tendrils that grow long, twining around other trees. The leaves are alternate, pentagonal-cordate shaped, large, and can reach 30 cm in length. They are usually shallowly divided into three lobes, and the undersides are densely covered with reddish-brown spider hairs. The flowers are small, yellow-green, and grow in racemes that open around June. When the flowers bloom, the petals fall off. The fruits are spherical, about 8 mm in diameter, ripen to a blackish purple color in the fall, and are edible, although sour. Wild animals such as bears and monkeys enjoy eating them. …
