A general of the Western Roman Empire. Son of a Suevic leader and an Ostrogothic princess. He defeated the Vandals, who were attempting to invade Sicily, and in 456 took control of the military. He forced Avitus to dethrone, and made his friend Majorian the Western Roman Emperor. He himself was made a patrician, and in 459 became consul. He eventually fell out with Majorian, and in 461 he forced Majorian to dethrone and executed him after he returned from Gaul after a major defeat at the hands of the Vandals. He then made Livius Severus the Western Roman Emperor. He suppressed his political enemies Marcellinus and Aegidius, and prevented the Vandals and Ostrogoths from repeatedly invading Italy and Sicily. After the death of Emperor Livius Severus (465), he supported puppet emperors such as Anthemius and Olybrius and defeated interference from the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine Empire), but he himself was an Arian Christian and of barbarian origin and therefore could not ascend to the throne.

西ローマの将軍。スエビ人の首領と東ゴート王女との子。シチリア侵入を企てたバンダル族を破り，456年軍の実権を握るとアウィツス帝を退位させ，友人のマヨリアヌスを西ローマ皇帝に推戴，みずからは貴族に列せられ，459年執政官 (コンスル ) になった。やがてマヨリアヌスと不和になり，461年バンダル族に大敗してガリアから帰ったマヨリアヌスを退位させ処刑。次いでリビウス・セウェルスを西ローマ皇帝に推戴。政敵マルケリヌスやアエギディウスを押え，再三イタリアやシチリアに侵入を試みるバンダル，東ゴートを防いだ。リビウス・セウェルス帝の死 (465) 後も，アンテミウス，オリブリウスらの傀儡帝を擁して，東ローマ (ビザンチン帝国) からの干渉を打ち破ったが，みずからは，アリウス派のキリスト教徒で，蛮族の出身であったため，帝位につけなかった。
