A province on the southeast coast of mainland China, facing the East China Sea and the Taiwan Strait. Its capital is Fuzhou. Its abbreviated name is Bin. The province is mountainous overall, with only a few plains in the valleys and coastal areas of the Oujiang, Binjiang, and Jiulongjiang rivers, which originate in the Wuyi Mountains on the border with Jiangxi Province and the Xianxialing Mountains on the border with Zhejiang Province, and transportation between the river valleys and plains is inconvenient. It is connected to Zhejiang and Jiangxi Provinces by mountain passes, and relies on coastal shipping routes centered around Xiamen and Fuzhou. In 1956, the Yingtan-Xiamen Railway, which runs north to south, was completed, and the Nanping-Fuzhou-South Railway was also built, connecting Nanping, Fuzhou, and the South-Kan area. Although the cultivated land area is only 15% of the province's total land area, it produces rice, which is grown twice a year, as well as sweet potatoes, wheat, soybeans, sugarcane, tea, and fruits (tangerines, longans, lychees). The province is rich in fisheries, with croaker, hairtail, and sea bream being caught, and solar salt production (Hoden, Zhaoan) is also carried out along the coast. There is anthracite from the Binjiang coalfields in the north and the Longyan coalfields in the south, iron from Anxi and Huaan, and molybdenum from Yongtai and Ningde. Small-scale handicrafts are widely practiced, mainly paper, ink, tea, rice, and sugar, and modern industries are centered in Fuzhou and Xiamen. It has close ties with Taiwan across the strait, and is famous as the birthplace of overseas Chinese from the South Seas (Southeast Asia). It has an area of 121,400 km2 . Population: 35.79 million (2014). →Related topics Oolong tea | Southern China | Taiwan Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
