The capital of North Dakota, located in the south-central part of the state. Population 49,000 (1990). Located on the east bank of the Missouri River, it is the center of grain and livestock distribution and processing in the spring wheat region. It is also a commercial and cultural center, and is home to industries such as agricultural machinery. Founded as a military post in 1872, it was named after the German Iron Chancellor Bismarck in order to attract German capital when the Northern Pacific Railroad was built.
