The official language of Laos. The "su" in Lao is a misunderstanding of the plural "-s", so Laos itself is called Lao. It is one of the Thai languages, and is particularly close to Thai, with monosyllabic words and tones. Most of the polysyllabic words are loanwords, many of which are from Pali or Cambodian. The language is written in the Lao script, which was derived from the Khmer script. There are about 3 million speakers in Laos, and about 15 million speakers outside the country. Dialectally, it is divided into two dialects: Luang Prabang in the north, where the royal capital is, and Vientiane in the south, where the capital is, but the recently reported Yo (Nyo) is thought to be a third series.

ラオスの公用語。ラオスのスは，複数の-sを誤解したためにいわれるようになったもので，みずからはラオという。タイ諸語の一つで，なかでもタイ語に非常に近く，単音節語を主とし，声調を有する。多音節語は大部分借用語で，パーリ語やカンボジア語からのものが多い。文字はクメール文字から出たラオ文字を使用。使用人口は，ラオス領内で約 300万人，領外で約 1500万人を数える。方言的には，王都のある北のルアンプラバン方言と，首都のある南のビエンチャン方言に2分されるが，最近報告されたヨ語 (ニョ語) はその第3系列をなすものとみられる。
