A terrestrial orchid (illustration) that grows under sparse forests and on the forest edges of low mountains. Its striking bright yellow flowers give it its Japanese name, Kinran, a reference to the flower's color. The plant is hairless. The rhizome is short and has many hard roots. The stem is 30-60 cm long and has 5-6 leaves that grow alternately. The leaves clasp the stem, are 7-12 cm long, 2-4 cm wide, elliptical to lanceolate, and have prominent vertical wrinkles. The flowers bloom in April and May, 3-10 in number, somewhat densely packed, about 1 cm in diameter, bright yellow, and rarely open. The bracts are triangular and much shorter than the ovary. The sepals and petals are about 1.5 cm long. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
