A group of islands arranged in an arc to the northeast of New Guinea. Also known as the Bismarck Archipelago. Part of Papua New Guinea. Consists of about 200 islands, including the Admiralty Islands, New Ireland, and New Britain. The inhabitants are mostly Melanesian and cultivate taro, cocoa, coffee, etc. After being under German and Australian rule, it became part of Papua New Guinea in 1975. Parts of the islands were occupied by Japan during World War II.
