1913‐80 American economist. Born in Kansas. Studied at the University of Kansas and then Harvard University. After working for a government agency for a time from 1942, he became an assistant professor at Yale University in 1946 and an associate professor at the University of Chicago in 1947, before becoming a professor at the same university in 1949. From the 1940s to the early 1950s, he published a succession of original theoretical studies across a wide range of fields in economics, including general equilibrium, international trade, employment, money and interest, and business cycles, leading the world's academic community alongside PA Samuelson and earning the nickname "theorist's theorist."
