…The peasant “People’s Army” reached 20,000-40,000 people and covered the entire Tambov province. To suppress the revolt, the Soviet government dispatched Vladimir A. Antonov-Ovseenko and Tukhachevsky, and deployed more than 40,000 troops to suppress the revolt in July 1921. The leader of the revolt, Antonov, died in Tambov in June 1922.
