A former town in Chiisagata County, eastern Nagano Prefecture. The town is centered in Tanaka, on the right bank of the Chikuma River, where the third-sector Shinano Railway runs. Rice and field crops are cultivated, and the town's specialty is oak walnuts. Mount Yunomaru in the northeast is part of Joshin'etsu Kogen National Park.
