A former town in Chiisagata County, eastern Nagano Prefecture. The town is centered in Tanaka, on the right bank of the Chikuma River, where the third-sector Shinano Railway runs. Rice and field crops are cultivated, and the town's specialty is oak walnuts. Mount Yunomaru in the northeast is part of Joshin'etsu Kogen National Park. 長野県東部，小県(ちいさがた)郡の旧町。中心は第三セクターしなの鉄道が通じる千曲川右岸の田中。米作，畑作が行われ，特産にカシグルミがある。北東部の湯ノ丸山などは上信越高原国立公園の一部。2004年４月北佐久郡北御牧村と合併し，東御市となる。86.55km2。２万5620人（2003）。
