Also written as Hikigane or Hikikei, and also called Shukei (hand-held bell). A type of Buddhist musical instrument (illustration). A small, teacup-shaped vessel made of resonating copper with a hole in the bottom and a rod-shaped handle attached for easy portability. A small cushion is placed between the vessel and the handle. A thin metal rod tied to the handle with a string strikes the rim to produce sound. It is characterized by a high, clear tone with a lingering resonance. In Zen Buddhism, two Hikigane with different pitches are sometimes used as a pair, designated A and B, or large and small. The "hiki" in Hikigane is said to mean to attract the attention of monks or to lead people to the Buddhist path, and in fact Hikigane are often sounded as a signal to instruct the monks on the movements and etiquette during Buddhist ceremonies, or to lead the monks when they walk in a procession.
