? - c.1190 A representative medieval French verse writer. Biography unknown. After initially writing a translation of Ovid and the story of King Mark and Iseult, he wrote the long work Elec and Enid in c.1165, creating his own world. This is the story of a knight who is madly in love with his wife and finds his identity through adventure, and his next work, Cligés (c.1176), is a kind of "anti-Tristan" story about a queen who falls in love with her husband's nephew and maintains her true love until a happy ending, and it stands in opposition to the theme of illicit love pursued by the troubadours of southern France.

フランス中世を代表する韻文物語作家。伝記未詳。初めオウィディウスの翻訳や，マルク王とイズーの物語などを書いた後，1165年ころ長編《エレクとエニード》を書いて独自の世界を獲得した。これは妻への愛に溺れた騎士が冒険の末に自己を確立する物語であり，次作の《クリジェス》(1176ころ)は夫の甥を愛した王妃が真の愛を貫いて幸福な結末にいたる一種の〈反トリスタン〉物語であって，南仏抒情詩人(トルバドゥール)たちの追求した不倫の恋の主題に対する反措定の立場に立っている。
