Duke of Apulia. Son of Tancredi, a Norman knight of the house of Hauteville. His Italian name was Roberto il Guiscardo. He came to Italy around 1040 and served the Duke of Capua, and then began the conquest of Calabria with his brother. He became Count of Apulia in 57. In the summer of 59, he attended the synod held by Pope Nicholas II at Melfi to reform the church, and swore allegiance to the church. At this time he was appointed "Duke of Apulia and Calabria, future Duke of Sicily." The church in the Byzantine territories of southern Italy was subordinate to Constantinople, but with the Norman conquest it came under the control of the Church of Rome.

プーリア公。ノルマンの騎士オートビル家のタンクレディの子。イタリア名はRoberto il Guiscardo。1040年ごろイタリアに来てカプア公に仕え，さらに兄とともにカラブリア征服に着手。57年にプーリア伯となる。59年夏，教皇ニコラウス2世が教会改革のためメルフィで開いた教会会議に出席し，教会に忠誠を誓った。このときに〈プーリアおよびカラブリア公，将来のシチリア公〉に任ぜられた。南イタリアのビザンティン領の教会はコンスタンティノープルに従属していたが，ノルマンの征服とともにローマ教会の支配下に入った。
