Under the Roofs of Paris (English: Sous les toits de Paris)

Under the Roofs of Paris (English: Sous les toits de Paris)

A French-German co-production from 1930. It was the first talkie directed by Rene Clair, who signed a contract with the German company Film Sonore Taubis, and became a representative work of early French talkies. The story is about a street singer who is mistakenly put in prison, and when he is released, he finds that his girlfriend has been taken by his friend. Starring Albert Préjean (1894-1979), it is a loving portrayal of the everyday life of Parisian working-class people. Rene Clair focused on showing the characters' large gestures through singing and music, rather than recording actual sounds and lines, and stuck to a silent film aesthetic. It was not a big hit in Paris, but was a hit around the world, including in Berlin, New York, and Tokyo (it was ranked 2nd in Kinema Junpo's Top 10 when it was released in 1931). Although the film actually used elaborate Parisian sets designed by the Russian-born art director Lazare Meerson (1897-1938), the film created a long-lasting image of Paris abroad.
