He first moved the capital of the principality from the ancient center of Rostov, where the nobility had a strong influence, to Vladimir, which had been founded during the time of his grandfather Vladimir Monomakh (1157), and built the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary to enhance its status as the capital. He himself lived in the village of Bogolyubovo near the city, so he was called Bogolyubskii. …

…The capital of the eponymous region in the central part of European Russia, Russia. Population 356,000 (1992). Located 190 km northeast of Moscow, midway between Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod, on the Klyazma River (a tributary of the Oka River). The city's history began in 1108, when Vladimir Monomakh built a fortress here. In 1157, Andrei Bogolyubsky made it the capital of the Vladimir-Suzdal Principality (see the entry for Grand Duchy of Vladimir), and it developed particularly well, acquiring great political significance in contrast to Kiev, the capital of Russia (Kievan Rus) at the time, which was already in decline. …
