A Chinese man of letters in the mid-Ming dynasty. Born in Xindu (Sichuan province). His courtesy name was Yongxiu. In 1511 (6th year of the Zhengde era), he passed the imperial examination with top marks and was awarded the Hanlin Shusen certificate. In 1524, when Gui Ke (?-1531), Zhang Reng (1475-1539) and others were appointed to the posts, he and 36 of his comrades submitted their opposing opinions to the emperor and were suspended from receiving their monthly salary. He also submitted his opinions with his comrades, so he was demoted to commoner status and exiled to Yunnan. After that, he enjoyed poetry and wine, and lived a secret life with his dissolute behavior, but he excelled in both classics and poetry. He was highly acclaimed for his erudition, and his books include "The General Records of Tanren" and "The Sheng'an Collection."
