Al-Andalus (English spelling)

It was originally the name given to the Iberian Peninsula by Muslims, but gradually came to refer to their area of control in the peninsula. The word originates from the Latin name Vandalicia, meaning "country of the Vandals," the Arabic pronunciation of which is Andalus. It is also called Al-Andalus. The Andalusian region in southern Spain is derived from this name. The extent of Andalus varied over time, but at its greatest during the time of Mansur al-Manṣūr (?-1002), the prime minister of the Umayyad dynasty, it included most of the peninsula except for the northern parts of Spain and Portugal.

初めイスラム教徒(ムスリム)によるイベリア半島の呼称であったが，しだいに同半島における彼らの支配領域を指す用語となった。語源は〈バンダル人の国〉のラテン語名Vandaliciaにあり，そのアラビア語なまりがアンダルスである。アル･アンダルスとも呼ばれる。スペイン南部のアンダルシア地方はこの呼称に由来する。アンダルスの範囲は時代によって相違し，その最大は後ウマイヤ朝の宰相マンスールal‐Manṣūr(？‐1002)の時代で，スペイン･ポルトガルの北部を除く半島の大部分を含んだ。
