Mankiewicz, H.

…American film director, producer, and screenwriter. Born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, he moved to Germany in 1928 as assistant Berlin correspondent for the Chicago Tribune, and also worked as a subtitle translator for films for the British and American markets at UFA. He returned to Japan in 1929 and joined Paramount Pictures, where his brother Herman Mankiewicz (1897-1953) was in the script department. After working as a dialogue writer, he wrote scripts for films such as the anthology film For a Million Yen (1932) directed by Ernst Lubitsch and King Vidor's Harvest (1934). In 1936, he became a producer, producing such films as Fritz Lang's Fury (1936), George Cukor's The Philadelphia Story (1940), George Stevens' Woman No. 1 (1942), and John M. Staal's The Keys to the Kingdom (1945).

…アメリカの映画監督，製作者，脚本家。ペンシルベニア州ウィルクス･バリの生れ。1928年，《シカゴ･トリビューン》紙のベルリン特派員助手としてドイツに渡り，ウーファ社での英米向け(英米版)映画の字幕翻訳者ともなる。29年に帰国して兄ハーマン･マンキーウィッツHerman Mankiewicz(1897‐1953)が脚本部に所属していたパラマウント社に入り，ダイアローグ･ライター(台詞作者)をへてエルンスト･ルビッチ監督らによる〈オムニバス映画〉《百万円貰ったら》(1932)，キング･ビダー(ビドア)監督の《麦秋》(1934)などの脚本を書き，さらに36年にはプロデューサーとなって，フリッツ･ラング監督の《激怒》(1936)，ジョージ･キューカー監督の《フィラデルフィア物語》(1940)，ジョージ･スティーブンズ監督の《女性No.1》(1942)，ジョン･M.スタール監督の《王国の鍵》(1945)などを製作した。…
