Japanese: ヒシバッタ(菱蝗) - ヒシバッタ

A general term for insects of the Orthoptera family Tetrigidae, or one of these. The grasshopper Acrydium japonicum (illustration) is a small insect with a body length of 7 to 11 mm, so named because it looks diamond-shaped when viewed from the back. It is commonly found throughout Japan and is also distributed in eastern Asia. It is earth-colored, with black markings and other marks on the back of the pronotum, but there are various types in which they disappear completely. Although small, it has a grasshopper-like head and thin, thread-like antennae.

直翅目ヒシバッタ科の昆虫の総称，またはそのうちの1種。ヒシバッタAcrydium japonicum（イラスト）は，体長7～11mmの小型の虫で，背面から見ると全体がひし形に見えるのでこの名がある。日本全国にふつうに見られ，アジア東部にも分布する。土色で，前胸背板の背部には黒色紋その他をもつが，まったく消えてしまうタイプのものまでいろいろの型がある。小さいながらもバッタのような頭部をもち，触角は細く糸状。
