Business unionism

Unlike European labor unions, American labor unions do not have a vision for the ultimate liberation of the working class, nor are they oriented toward socialism in any sense. The majority of American labor unions are solely concerned with improving the working conditions of workers and raising their economic and social status. To this end, American labor unions focus on establishing their status as labor unions, expanding the scope of free collective bargaining, and concluding labor agreements. As for the political struggle to achieve the above-mentioned goals, they do not establish their own labor political party or form a continuous supportive relationship with a political party, but simply engage in nonpartisan extraparliamentary activities, supporting only pro-labor union candidates.

アメリカの労働組合は，ヨーロッパの労働組合のように労働者階級の究極的解放についてのビジョンをもたず，またいかなる意味においても社会主義を志向せず，もっぱら労働者の労働諸条件を改善し，その経済的･社会的地位の向上を目ざすものが大多数である。この目的のため，アメリカの労働組合は労働組合の地位を確立し，自由な団体交渉の範囲を拡大し，労働協約を締結することに力を注ぐ。また上記目的を達成するための政治闘争にしても，独自の労働者政党を樹立したり，あるいは継続的にある政党と支持関係を結ぶようなことはせず，親労働組合的な候補者のみを支持するという無党派的院外活動を行うだけである。
