Fujikawa Yu

A medical scientist and medical historian. Born on May 11, 1865, as the eldest son of Fujikawa Susugu, in Yasumura Village, Asa County, Aki Province (Hiroshima Prefecture). In 1887 (Meiji 20), he graduated from Hiroshima Prefectural Medical School. He moved to Tokyo and became an insurance doctor for Meiji Life Insurance Company (now Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance Company), and joined the Chugai Medical News Company. In 1892, he organized a private association for the promotion of medical sciences, and on March 4, he held the first meeting to recommend physicians who had been great physicians. In 1895, he founded the Medical History Society together with Kure Shuzo, and published Medical History Materials. In 1897, he studied abroad at the University of Jena in Germany, where he studied internal medicine, particularly neurology and physical therapy. He received his doctor's degree in 1900 (Meiji 33), and after returning to Japan, he became the head of the medical department at Nihonbashi Nakasu Sanitarium. He published "History of Japanese Medicine" in 1904 and "History of Japanese Diseases" in 1912. In the same year, he was awarded the Imperial Academy Prize for "History of Japanese Medicine." In 1927 (Showa 2), he participated in the founding of the Japanese Society for Medical History, and in 1938 became the society's third president. He can be said to be the founder of modern Japanese medical history. He died of cholelithiasis on November 6, 1940. He was buried in his hometown of Hiroshima City.

医学者、医史学者。慶応(けいおう)元年5月11日、富士川雪(すすぐ)の長男として安芸(あき)国(広島県)安佐(あさ)郡安村に生まれる。1887年(明治20)県立広島医学校を卒業。上京して明治生命保険会社(現、明治安田生命保険相互会社)の保険医となり、中外医事新報社に入社した。1892年私立奨進医会を組織して、3月4日に第1回医家先哲追薦(ついぜん)会を催し、1895年呉秀三(くれしゅうぞう)とともに医史社をおこし、『医史料』を刊行した。1897年ドイツのイエナ大学に留学し、内科学、ことに神経病学と理学療法を修めた。1900年(明治33)学位を受け、帰国後は日本橋中州養生院内科医長に就任した。1904年『日本医学史』、1912年『日本疾病史』を発刊。同年『日本医学史』に対し、帝国学士院恩賜賞を授与された。1927年(昭和2)日本医史学会の創立に参画し、1938年同学会第3代理事長に就任した。近代日本医史学の鼻祖といえよう。昭和15年11月6日胆石症により死没。郷里広島市に葬られた。
