Kabuki actor. Stage name: Narita-ya. A disciple and grandson of Ichikawa Danjuro V. A representative actor of the late Edo period. Small in stature, with large eyes, excellent voice and eloquence, and a wide range of performances. Created the 18 Kabuki plays. In 1842, he was exiled from Edo for extravagance that went against the spirit of the Tenpo Reforms, and toured Osaka, Kyoto, and other areas until he was pardoned in 1849.

歌舞伎俳優。屋号成田屋。5世市川団十郎の外孫6世の門弟。幕末期の代表的名優。小柄で目が大きく音声と弁舌にすぐれ，芸域は広い。歌舞伎十八番を制定。天保 13 (1842) 年，天保の改革の趣旨にそむいた奢侈を理由に江戸追放の刑に処せられ，嘉永2 (49) 年赦免されるまで大坂，京都などを巡業した。
