An insect of the Lepidoptera family, Lymantriidae (illustration). Wings span 2-3cm. Both sexes have feathery antennae. The wings are orange-yellow, with one or two black markings above the outer edge of the forewing, and a pale-colored thin band about 1/3 and 2/3 of the way from the base. Adults emerge twice a year, in July and October, and often fly to lights. The first generation of males often have black-brown wings and parts of the body other than the head, and the females are larger and paler than the males. They are found in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, the Korean Peninsula, and China. The larvae are well known as pests of tea, and also eat the leaves of other Theaceae plants, such as camellia and sasanqua.
