A pro-German political regime in France that emerged during World War II. Following France's surrender to Germany in 1940, a government was established in Vichy in central France. The Third Republic Constitution was abolished, and Pétain became President of the country, calling for cooperation with Germany and a national revolution, and oppressing socialists and communists. He also promoted anti-Semitic policies. Originally, its territory was limited to non-occupied areas (the southern half of the mainland), but the entire country was occupied by German forces in 1942, and the Vichy government's authority became nominal.
