HN=C=O (43.02). Tautomer with cyanic acid HOCN. Structural isomer of fulminate HONC. Like cyanic acid, it is produced by the thermal decomposition of cyanuric acid. The gaseous molecule is H-N 0.99 Å, N-C 1.21 Å, C-O 1.17 Å. ∠HN-C 128°, ∠NC-O 180°. In the gaseous state or in solutions such as CCl 4 , benzene, and ether, it is mainly in the form of isocyanic acid and is stable for several weeks. It is slightly soluble in water and mainly in the form of cyanic acid, but it is unstable and hydrolyzes to ammonium bicarbonate. Isocyanate esters RNCO (R is a hydrocarbon group) are often more stable than cyanate esters. Metal salts of both MNCO and MOCN types are obtained depending on the type of metal. Metal complexes with both O -coordinated (cyanato complexes) and N -coordinated (isocyanato complexes) ligands are known. HN=C=O(43.02).
