Carborundum (English spelling)

Japanese: カーボランダム（英語表記）carborundum

A common name for silicon carbide. It was discovered by E. G. Acheson during an experiment aimed at obtaining artificial diamonds (1891). It was originally a trade name. It is made by mixing silica sand and coke and heating them vigorously (to about 2000°C). It has a hardness and high melting point second only to diamond, is resistant to chemicals, and conducts heat and electricity fairly well. Due to these properties, it is used in grinding wheels, abrasives, liners (coating materials) for the chemical industry, heat-resistant liners, and resistance heating elements for electric furnaces. As the raw material is in powder form, it is molded with thermosetting resins for grinding wheels, and sintered for high-temperature applications.

炭化ケイ素の通称。 E.G.アチソンが人工ダイヤモンドを得る目的で実験中に発見した (1891) 。当初は商品名であった。ケイ砂とコークスを混合強熱 (約 2000℃) してつくる。ダイヤモンドに次ぐ硬さと高融点をもち，薬品に侵されにくく，熱，電気はややよく伝える。これらの特性のため，砥石材料，研磨材，化学工業用ライナ (被覆材) ，耐熱ライナ，電気炉の抵抗発熱体などにつくられる。原料は粉状なので，砥石では熱硬化性樹脂などで成形し，高温用には焼結成形する。
