Arnauld, Antoine
Born: 6 February 1612, Paris
Died: August 8, 1694. Brussels. French theologian and philosopher. In 1632, he switched from law to theology at the suggestion of Father Saint-Cyran, became a priest under his guidance, and received his doctorate in theology in 1641. He began work on De la fréquente communion (On Frequent Communion), published in 1643, and was a great success. He succeeded his teacher as the theoretical pillar of the Jansenists, and came into fierce conflict with the Jesuits. In 1656, the year Pascal's Provenciale was published, which he had promoted, he was expelled from the Sorbonne and retired to Port-Royal-des-Champs. There, in 1860, together with Lancelot, he published La grammaire générale de Port-Royal, in 1862 with Nicole, La logique de Port-Royal, and in 1867, Nouveaux éléments de Géométrie (Introduction to New Geometry). In 1879, following the destruction of Port-Royal des Champs, he went into exile in the Netherlands. In 1885, he published Réflexions philosophiques et théologiques (Philosophical and Theological Reflections), which included a criticism of Malebranche. Philosophically, he belonged to the Cartesian school, and influenced the formation of Leibniz's thought through their correspondence.
