A city in the west of Tokyo. It was incorporated as a city in 1951. It straddles the Kanto Mountains and the Musashino Plateau, with the Tama River flowing east through the center. The city center is a village at the mouth of the Tama River, and developed as a post town on the Ome Kaido road, and the Ome Line runs through it. Cotton textiles have been popular since ancient times, and Ome cotton was known as Ome stripes and Ome cotton, and it produced a lot of bedding fabric until before World War II. Forestry is thriving in the mountainous areas. An industrial complex was developed in the eastern part of the city in the 1960s, and high-technology related industries are moving in and existing factories in the city are being relocated. The Daruma Market and Sumiyoshi Shrine Festival are famous. Kongoji Temple, Shiofune Kannon Temple, Mitake Shrine (Mitake), and Yoshino Plum Village are located here, and the western part belongs to Chichibu Tama Kai National Park. 東京都西部の市。1951年市制。関東山地と武蔵野台地にまたがり,中部を多摩川が東流する。中心市街は多摩川の渓口集落で青梅街道の宿場町として発達,青梅線が通じる。古くから綿織物が盛んで,青梅縞(じま),青梅綿として知られ,第2次世界大戦前まで夜具地を多産した。山間部では林業が盛ん。市域東部には昭和40年代に工業団地が造成され,ハイテクノロジー関連産業の進出や市街地の既存工場の移転が進められている。だるま市,住吉神社祭は有名。金剛寺,塩船観音寺,御岳神社(御岳),吉野梅郷があり,西部は秩父多摩甲斐国立公園に属する。1967年に始まった青梅マラソン(2月)には海外からも含めて1万5000人が参加し,日本最大のマラソン大会となっている。103.31km2。13万9339人(2010)。
