Santama

Japanese:
Santama

The name of the western half of Tokyo (excluding the islands), excluding the wards, refers to the three Tama districts of Nishitama, the former Kitatama, and the former Minamitama. Formerly part of Kanagawa Prefecture, it was incorporated into Tokyo Prefecture in 1893 (Meiji 26). There was also Higashitama District, but it merged with Minamitoshima District in 1896 to form Toyotama District, which was incorporated into Tokyo City in 1932 (Showa 7). It spreads from the Kanto Mountains to the Musashino Plateau, and many areas of the plateau were developed as new rice fields during the Edo period. Following the Great Kanto Earthquake, the high, dry plateau was urbanized as residential areas, and especially after World War II, rapid urbanization led to the establishment of many satellite cities, and Kitatama District disappeared in 1970 (Showa 45), and Minamitama District disappeared in 1971. Currently, Nishitama District has three towns and one village.
