A Mongolian ethnic group living in the mountainous region of central Afghanistan, with a population of about 1.6 million. They are divided into Eastern Hazaras, who live mainly in Hazarajat, and Western Hazaras, who live at the foot of the Papmisus Mountains and near the Iranian border. They are said to be descendants of Genghis Khan's army. The Eastern Hazaras are Shiite Muslims, speak a mixture of Mongolian and Turkic dialects of Persian, and live in walled villages. In addition to raising livestock, they rotate crops such as barley, wheat, beans, and fruit, but many men migrate to Kabul and other places to work. The Western Hazaras are Sunni Muslims, speak a dialect of Persian, and live a nomadic lifestyle.
