A lake in the southern part of Shandong Province, China, on the border with Jiangsu Province. It has an area of 660 square kilometers. From the south of Jining, the lakes Nanyang, Dushan, Zhaoyang, and Weishan are lined up in a northwest-southeast direction, and are also called the Southern Four Lakes because they are connected to each other. The Lu Canal (part of the Grand Canal) passes across it (on the east side), and since ancient times it has been a key point for water transportation connecting the Yangtze River system in the south and the Yellow River system in the north. Located between the North China Plain and the Luzhong Mountains, it was a low-lying area that often suffered from flooding, but this has been overcome through repeated repairs, such as merging part of the Grand Canal with the lake.
