The Ten Juju Bibasharon

The Ten Juju Bibasharon

A Buddhist book with 17 volumes. It is said to have been written by the Indian Buddhist scholar Nagarjuna (c. 150-250), but only one Chinese translation by Kumarajiva in the early 5th century remains, and neither the original Sanskrit text nor the Tibetan translation has been handed down. The extant Chinese translation is a mixture of poems and prose, with the prose explaining the contents of the poems, so there is doubt as to whether the prose part was written by Nagarjuna. Kumarajiva translated it based on the recitations of the Indian monk Buddhayasha, and it is said that the two men had disagreements about the translation, leaving the work unfinished, so it is thought that the prose contains much of Kumarajiva's understanding and commentary. As the title suggests, this book is a commentary on the Ten Stages of the Buddha, which explains the ideals and practice of Mahayana bodhisattvas. However, it is not a literal commentary, but rather explains the ideas and practice of Mahayana bodhisattvas based on the Ten Stages of the Buddha. In later times, with the popularity of Pure Land Buddhism, the chapter "Easy Practices Chapter," which explains the easy path of chanting the name of Buddha, has attracted particular attention, and although there have been many studies of this chapter, there have been very few studies of the book as a whole. However, it is closely related to Nagarjuna's Bodhi-charts and can be said to be an extremely important treatise for understanding the ideas of Mahayana Buddhism.
