Conakry (English spelling)
Konakry is the capital of Guinea. It is a port city located on Tombo Island in the Atlantic Ocean near the tip of the Karume Peninsula in the southwest of the country. It is connected to the mainland by a bridge about 300 meters long. It is hot and humid. It was founded by France in 1884, and became the capital of the French Protectorate in 1891, and the capital of French Guiana in 1893, and inherited the position of capital after independence. In the 1950s, it developed rapidly due to iron ore on the Karume Peninsula and bauxite on the Ross Islands offshore. Development of both resources was halted due to resource depletion, but the development of inland bauxite increased its importance as an export port. The main exports are bauxite (alumina), coffee, pineapple, palm oil, palm kernel, and citrus fruits, and the fishing industry is also developing. It is the political, economic, and cultural center of the country, and has various research and educational institutions and museums, as well as industries such as canned fruit, textiles, plastics, automobile assembly, and furniture manufacturing. It is the starting point of a 661 km railway line leading to the inland city of Kankan, and has an international airport. The population is 1,597,000 (2009).
