A salt mineral containing the arsenate radical (AsO 4 ) 3− as its basic chemical component. It exists in the anhydrous, acidic salt, and hydrated forms, and also in species in which some of the arsenic As is replaced by atoms such as phosphorus P or vanadium V. The crystal structure is based on a tetrahedron of AsO 4 , forming the framework of the structure. For this reason, many minerals are isomorphous with phosphate minerals, which are salt minerals of the (PO 4 ) 3− group, and vanadate minerals, which are salt minerals of the (VO 4 ) 3− group, both of which have a similar tetrahedral structure. It often occurs as a secondary mineral in the oxidation zones of mines that contain such minerals, as a decomposition product of arsenic minerals, especially arsenic sulfide minerals.
