A deciduous shrub of the Rosaceae family (APG classification: Rosaceae). It grows to a height of 1-2 meters. The leaves are alternate, odd-pinnate, compound, and 10-20 cm long. There are 9-13 leaflets, oblong or narrow oblong, 2-7 cm long, sessile, with serrated edges on the upper half and entire edges on the lower half. The upper surface is bright green, while the underside is powdery white. It is named after Rowan, but the underside of the leaves is white. From June to August, it bears white, five-petaled flowers about 1 cm in diameter in a panicle at the end of the branches. The fruit is pear-shaped, ripens red in autumn, is slightly elliptical, 1-1.5 cm long, about 1 cm in diameter, and has a star-shaped groove at the tip. It is endemic to Japan, distributed north of Mt. Hakusan in Honshu, and from the upper subalpine zone to the lower alpine zone in Hokkaido. The red ripe fruit is impressive when the leaves fall in late autumn. [Naohiro Naruhashi December 13, 2019] [References] |A species endemic to Japan.
