Rowan tree - Rowan tree

A deciduous shrub of the Rosaceae family (APG classification: Rosaceae). It grows to a height of 1-2 meters. The leaves are alternate, odd-pinnate, compound, and 10-20 cm long. There are 9-13 leaflets, oblong or narrow oblong, 2-7 cm long, sessile, with serrated edges on the upper half and entire edges on the lower half. The upper surface is bright green, while the underside is powdery white. It is named after Rowan, but the underside of the leaves is white. From June to August, it bears white, five-petaled flowers about 1 cm in diameter in a panicle at the end of the branches. The fruit is pear-shaped, ripens red in autumn, is slightly elliptical, 1-1.5 cm long, about 1 cm in diameter, and has a star-shaped groove at the tip. It is endemic to Japan, distributed north of Mt. Hakusan in Honshu, and from the upper subalpine zone to the lower alpine zone in Hokkaido. The red ripe fruit is impressive when the leaves fall in late autumn.

バラ科（APG分類：バラ科）の落葉低木。高さ1～2メートル。葉は互生し、奇数羽状複葉、長さ10～20センチメートル。小葉は9～13枚で長楕円(ちょうだえん)形ないし狭長楕円形、長さ2～7センチメートル、無柄で、上半部には鋸歯(きょし)があるが、下半部は全縁。表面は鮮緑色、裏面は粉白色。名はナナカマドに似るが、葉裏が白いことによる。6～8月、枝の先に径約1センチメートルの白色の5弁花を散房状につける。果実はなし状果で、秋に紅熟し、やや楕円形で長さ1～1.5センチメートル、径約1センチメートル、先端は星状の溝となる。日本固有種で、本州の白山以北、北海道の亜高山帯上部から高山帯下部に分布する。晩秋の落葉時の紅熟果は印象的である。
