In the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China, Western-style silver coins were first circulated, and foreign-made silver yuan (Western silver) was also circulated, but in response to this, silver coins were minted in China from 1889, gradually replacing the Western silver. In response to the Great Depression, the Nationalist government abolished the traditional ryo and made the silver yuan (Sun Yat-sen statue coin) the standard currency in 1933, but in the currency reform of 1935, it was replaced by legal tender (inconvertible paper money) and the circulation of the silver yuan was stopped.
