Arctic art (English: Arctic art)

Japanese: 極北美術 - きょくほくびじゅつ（英語表記）Arctic art

A general term for Mesolithic rock paintings found widely in Scandinavia, Finland, and northern Russia. The first were discovered in 1848 on the shores of Lake Onega in northern Russia, followed by others in northern Sweden in 1880, and then throughout Norway in the 20th century. These are divided into a northern group (northern and central Norway, Finland, northern Russia, Siberia) made by hunter-fishermen from the 6th millennium BC to the middle of the 2nd millennium BC, and a southern group (Sweden) made by farmers and pastoralists who already possessed bronze tools from the 2nd millennium BC to around AD.

スカンジナビア，フィンランド，北ロシアに広く分布する，中石器時代の岩面画の総称。1848年に北ロシアのオネガ湖畔で発見されたのが最初で，その後1880年に北スウェーデンで，20世紀に入ってからノルウェー各地で続々と発見された。これらは，前6千年紀から前2千年紀中ごろにかけて狩猟･漁労民によって刻まれた北部グループ(北部･中部ノルウェー，フィンランド，北ロシア，シベリア)と，前2千年紀から紀元前後にかけてすでに青銅器を所有していた農耕･牧畜民の制作にかかる南部グループ(スウェーデン)に分けられる。
