Rock magnetism

Natural remanent magnetism in rocks is a fossil of the geomagnetic field at the time the rocks were formed, so it is important to study why rocks are magnetized and what properties of rock magnetism are useful for studying geomagnetism. This field is called rock magnetism, and it can be said that the beginning of this field was in 1853, when M. Meronie discovered the natural remanent magnetism of rocks. After that, research on rock magnetism was actively carried out in France and Japan from the late 1930s, and made great strides in the 1950s along with the development of paleomagnetism.

岩石の自然残留磁気はその岩石の生成されたときの地球磁場を化石として残しているものがあるので，岩石の磁気がなぜ生じるか，またその性質のうちどういう性質が地磁気の研究に役立つかを研究することは重要である。このような学問が岩石磁気学と呼ばれるもので，この学問の始りは 1853年 M.メロニーが岩石の自然残留磁気を発見したときとみてよいであろう。その後 1930年代後半よりフランスや日本で活発に研究が進められ，50年代には古地磁気学の発展とともに飛躍的に発展した。
