French novelist, poet, and critic. Born in Paris. Known as a "late Surrealist," he has a fantastical style of writing. His maternal grandfather, P. Bernard, was famous as a collector of Impressionist paintings, and he grew up in an artistic environment from an early age. While studying archaeology at university, he traveled throughout Europe, especially loving the Mediterranean coast, which he often used as the setting for his later works. During the German occupation of Monaco in World War II, he fled to Monaco to avoid being embroiled in political conflict, and there he devoted himself to anti-temporal writing, ignoring the war, and self-published a collection of short stories, "Tarnished Years" (1943), and a collection of poems, "Edela" (1945).

フランスの小説家，詩人，評論家。パリ生れ。〈遅れてきたシュルレアリスト〉といわれる幻想的作風の持主。母方の祖父P.ベルナールは印象派絵画の収集家として有名であり，幼時より芸術的環境の中で育った。大学では考古学を学ぶかたわらヨーロッパ各地を旅行，特に地中海沿岸の土地を愛し，後年作品の舞台としても頻繁に取り上げている。第2次大戦のドイツ軍占領中は，政治的葛藤に巻き込まれることを嫌ってモナコへ逃避，その地において戦乱をよそに反時代的創作に専念し，短編集《汚れた年月》(1943)，詩集《エデラ》(1945)を自費出版した。
