Nonmetallic mining

Japanese: 非金属鉱業 - ひきんぞくこうぎょう

An industry that explores for, mines, and beneficiates nonmetallic minerals to enhance their purity and supply them as products. Major nonmetallic minerals include limestone, silica sand, wax stone, silica stone, dolomite, bentonite, fireclay, and olivine. Japan's nonmetallic mining industry has a production value of 212.1 billion yen, accounting for just over 50% of the total mining industry of 396.5 billion yen. There are 603 establishments, accounting for approximately 90% of the total mining industry of 683. Limestone mining accounts for the largest proportion of nonmetallic mining, with a production value of 139.1 billion yen (66%) and 247 establishments (41%) (1995).

非金属鉱物を探査，採掘し選鉱して純度を高め製品として供給する産業。非金属鉱物の主要なものとしては石灰石，ケイ砂，蠟石，ケイ石，ドロマイト，ベントナイト，耐火粘土，カンラン石などがある。日本の非金属鉱業の規模は生産金額で2121億円で，鉱業全体の3965億円の5割強を占める。事業所は603で鉱業全体の683の約90％に達する。非金属鉱業のなかで最大の比重を占めるのは石灰石鉱業で，生産金額で1391億円(66％)，事業所数で247(41％)である(1995)。
