…Following the early theories of painting by the Kano and Tosa schools, in the 18th century, sound arguments emerged in support of emerging schools of painting such as ukiyo-e, literati painting, and Western-style painting, and the style took on a more diverse appearance. Nishikawa Sukenobu's Gaho Saishikiho (published in Ehon Wabigoto in 1742) shows his awareness as an ukiyo-e artist who inherited the merits of Yamato-e.
