This is a theorem that for a continuous function f , any intermediate value between f ( a ) and f ( b ) can be taken on in [ a , b ]. The continuity of real numbers is based on the fact that the interval is a connected set. This means that for a continuous function, the graph is connected. However, a continuous function is a different concept from connectivity, and it cannot generally be said that a function whose graph is connected is a continuous function. When f is differentiable, the derivative f ' is not necessarily continuous, but the intermediate value theorem holds.
