...The surfaces of metal and carbon electrodes are covered with oxides in an oxidizing atmosphere, but functional substances are chemically bonded or strongly adsorbed to the surface of such electrodes to provide a field for electron transfer and new electrode functions. The first modified electrode was created by Miller LL Miller et al. in 1975. They oxidized a graphite electrode at 160°C in air to introduce carboxyl groups, then converted it into an acid chloride with thionyl chloride SOCl ₂ , and created an electrode in which phenylalanine was amide-bonded using ( S )-phenylalanine methyl ester (see figure), and used this electrode to perform asymmetric reduction of 4-acetylpyridine and ethyl phenylglyoxylate. ...
