Delftware

Delftware
Soft earthenware made in Delft, Netherlands. It began in 1584 when Italian majolica potter Chido di Sabino moved to Antwerp and introduced the majolica technique to the Netherlands, and it was introduced to Delft in the mid-17th century and became popular. Initially, pieces strongly influenced by majolica were made, but soon copies of Chinese porcelain became popular, and from the end of the 17th century, Imari copies (→ Imari ware) were also made. The production technique is to use a mixture of clay from Tournai on the Schelde River and clay from Mülheim on the Rhine as the base, shape it into a thin body, cover it with a milky white glaze and fire it at a low temperature, paint it with cobalt or other pigments, dry it, cover it with a transparent glaze and fire it at a high temperature. Beginning in the 17th century, porcelain was characterized by patterns and shapes that imitated Chinese and Japanese porcelain, and other pieces depicting European landscapes, floral patterns, and customs were also actively produced. From the early 18th century, many pieces had the artist's mark on the bottom. Types of porcelain included tableware, vases, tiles, human and animal figures, and ceramic plaques.
