Shikechi fern - Shikechi fern

Japanese: シケチシダ - しけちしだ
Shikechi fern - Shikechi fern
A medium-sized herb of the Melastomataceae family that prefers to grow in shady, damp mountain forests. Its Japanese name comes from its location in the wetlands. It is summer-green. The rhizomes are creeping and the leaves grow rather densely. The petiole is slightly reddish purple, juicy, and up to 40 cm long, light brown at the base, lanceolate, and sparsely covered with scales along the entire edge. The leaf blade is oblong to elliptical-ovate, longer than the petiole, bipinnately mid-lobed to compound, glabrous or hairy. The pinnae are almost opposite and oblong-lanceolate. The pinnae are variously incised, broadly or narrowly attached to the rachis at the base, and the lobes have shallow blunt serrated edges or entire edges.
