A fish of the family Muscidae in the order Perciformes. It grows to about 15 cm in length. Its body is long and oval, with marked laterality. Its mouth is small, but can extend significantly downward and forward. Its fins have sharp spines reminiscent of holly leaves. Its body color is silvery white, with dark spots on its back and large black spots on the back of its head and the front of its dorsal fin. It lives symbiotically with luminous bacteria. It grows in colonies from the mouths of rivers to shallow areas of inland bays. It is found on the coasts south of central Honshu, in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula, China, and Taiwan. スズキ目ヒイラギ科の魚。全長 15cmぐらいになる。体は長卵形で,著しく側扁する。口は小さいが,前下方に著しく伸出できる。鰭のとげは鋭く,ヒイラギ(柊)の葉を思わせる。体色は銀白色で,背方に暗色斑紋,後頭部と背鰭の前部に大きい黒色斑がある。発光バクテリアが共生している。河口付近から内湾の浅所にかけて群生する。本州中部以南の沿岸や朝鮮半島南部,中国,台湾に分布する。定置網などに入り,食用とされる。
