A fish of the family Muscidae in the order Perciformes. It grows to about 15 cm in length. Its body is long and oval, with marked laterality. Its mouth is small, but can extend significantly downward and forward. Its fins have sharp spines reminiscent of holly leaves. Its body color is silvery white, with dark spots on its back and large black spots on the back of its head and the front of its dorsal fin. It lives symbiotically with luminous bacteria. It grows in colonies from the mouths of rivers to shallow areas of inland bays. It is found on the coasts south of central Honshu, in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula, China, and Taiwan. It is caught in fixed nets and is considered edible.
