Tomás de Zumárraga

A Spanish Dominican missionary. He came to Japan with Francisco Morales in 1602 (Keicho 7) and landed on Koshikijima in Satsuma (Kagoshima Prefecture). In 1605, he went to Omura (Nagasaki Prefecture) to comfort and encourage imprisoned missionaries and believers, and then went to Hirado (Nagasaki Prefecture). He was later appointed vice-provincial of the order and encouraged believers in Nagasaki and Arima (Nagasaki Prefecture) who were under persecution, but in 1617 (Genwa 3), he was arrested and imprisoned in Omura. In 1622, he was burned at the stake along with Franciscan Inspector Apolinario Franco (1570-1622) and others. In 1867, he was listed as a Gospel Martyr.

スペイン人のドミニコ会宣教師。1602年(慶長7)フランシスコ・モラレスとともに来日、薩摩(さつま)(鹿児島県)甑島(こしきじま)に上陸した。1605年大村(長崎県)に赴き、投獄中の宣教師や信徒を慰問、激励し、その後平戸(ひらど)(長崎県)に渡った。のち同会副管区長に任命され、迫害下の長崎、有馬(ありま)(長崎県)の信徒を励ましていたが、1617年(元和3)大村で捕らえられ投獄。1622年フランシスコ会監察師アポリナリオ・フランコApolinario Franco(1570―1622)らとともに火刑に処せられた。1867年福音(ふくいん)殉教者に列せられた。
