A city in the Leningrad Oblast in northwestern Russia. It is located about 200 km east-southeast of St. Petersburg, on the Tikhvinka River. The town was formed around the Tikhvin Monastery, founded in 1560, and developed into a commercial center with the development of the Tikhvin waterway in the early 19th century. Industries include lumber, chemicals, and food. The Cathedral of the Assumption (16th-18th century) still stands. It is the birthplace of composer Rimsky-Korsakov, and his birthplace is now a memorial museum. The main railway line connecting St. Petersburg and Vologda runs through the town.
